Poster for Anton Corbijn’s ‘The American’

Apple has debuted the poster for Dutch helmer Anton Corbijn’s The American starring George Clooney as Jack, a private assassin and master craftsman. When a job in Sweden ends more harshly than expected for this American abroad, he vows to his contact that his next assignment will be his last. Jack reports to the Italian countryside, where he holes up in a small town and relishes being away from death for a spell. The assignment, as specified by a Belgian woman, Mathilde (Thekla Reuten), is in the offing as a weapon is constructed. Surprising himself, Jack seeks out the friendship of local priest Father Benedetto (Paolo Bonacelli) and pursues romance with local woman Clara (Violante Placido). But by stepping out of the shadows, Jack may be tempting fate.

Corbijn directed 2007’s Control and may be more prominently known around the world as a photographer and the man behind the promotional work for Depeche Mode and U2. However, for those that saw Control you know he was able to transfer his visual style to the big screen, which makes The American one of 2010’s more anticipated features.

I included the trailer just above for those that haven’t seen it, and the poster is directly below. You can also download a hi-res version for yourself at Apple.com right here.

The American hits theaters on September 1.
