UPDATE: Angelina Jolie for Tom Cruise in ‘Edwin A. Salt’

UPDATE: Only minutes after posting what I thought was a rumor I find out via Variety this is actually a done deal and Wimmer will indeed be rewriting the script to satisfy the gender change, but apparently the project won’t require that much of an overhaul to suit her.

For a long time Tom Cruise has been attached to star in Edwin A. Salt as the title character, a CIA officer who’s accused by a defector of being a Russian sleeper spy. He must elude capture long enough to clear his name. On July 1, 2008 Variety announced Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games, Catch a Fire) would direct the vehicle and while Cruise’s name was still attached it wasn’t confirmed or “official” that he would star.

Well, it seems there is good reason to believe Cruise may not be starring as Entertainment Weekly has scored news that it may not end up being a male lead at all, but the role may be rewritten for a female.

EW has learned Columbia Pictures may be negotiating with Angelina Jolie to star with Noyce still attached to direct. One would have to assume this would require a rewrite, but EW didn’t have news on that, only the rumored change in genitalia. The current script was penned by Thomas Crown Affair writer Kurt Wimmer.
