Two Reasons Why DVDs Will Never Go Away

One of the great things about collecting and owning DVDs is how cool it looks when you have a shitload of them, especially when you purchase the cool collections such as the Alfred Hitchcock Collection ot the Seinfeld Puffy Shirt collector’s package. Well, I often debate with one of my friends as to whether or not the actual physical disc will ever go away as we move into the era of digital media. I don’t know about you, but I am not interested in watching movies on my computer screen, and I don’t even own a TiVo or digital cable. I know nothing about movies on demand or any of that. What I am quite familiar with are DVDs, and when Universal sent me the complete season series collections for “Miami Vice” and “Northern Exposure” it only solidified my position that no matter how digital we get people still want to own cool looking shit.

Just above you see the box for the “Miami Vice” series. It includes all five seasons of “Miami Vice” and all the special features that came with those seasons. It has a faux alligator skin cover with a velvet lining on the inside. You can click the image above for a hi-res look at the box, and no making fun of my inabilities to take a good picture.

Just above you see the box opened up to show everything it has to offer. I don’t know about you, but if I was a major “Miami Vice” fan this would be a must own. Considering it is only $135 at Amazon.com I would also say it would make a kick ass Christmas gift for some lucky fan or even an easy buy for someone that just likes the show. On top of all that you get to show off your cool ass box. You get to hold it and admire it and touch it’s smooth yet rough skin and …

Okay, I got a little carried away there, let’s move on…

Here we have the complete series box set for “Northern Exposure” and it also runs $135 at Amazon.com and is a supremely impressive little box set that looks cool as hell on the shelf.

As you can see (and click for a hi-res version), it is in the form of a duffle bag/attache carry-all. The outside is a suede material and on the inside you get all six seasons of the Emmy-winning show and all the features each season has to offer. It boils down to 84 hours and 51 minutes.

Both of these sets hit DVD shelves today and I have to assume that die hards have already asked for their favorite one for Christmas and many probably couldn’t even wait, but the one thing these two sets prove to me, along with sets like the James Bond Ultimate Collector’s Gift Set and the Complete Series for “Angel” Set is that DVDs aren’t going anywhere. Hell, have you seen the Harry Potter Ultimate Gift Sets? Look at these: DVD, HD DVD, Blu-ray.

Yeah, I don’t think DVDs are going anywhere. The studios make too much money off them and people can’t wait to get their hands on them. I will say that perhaps one day it won’t be DVDs, but I can almost guarantee it will be some form of physical something or other that we can show off to our friends.
