La, La, La, La, La, La… ‘The Smurfs’ are Coming

Back in June Newsweek reported that the chances of a movie based on the long-running cartoon “The Smurfs” would be coming to the big screen, and today Variety confirmed the rumor as it was announced that Paramount Pictures is setting up a 3-D CGI feature based on the series.

The little blue guys that are always running from Gargamel and his cat Azriel will be produced by Jordan Kerner and Nickelodeon Movies who have conceived the project as a trilogy and are aiming to release the first film in 2008 to coincide with the 50th anniversary of “The Smurfs.”

Herb Ratner has been tapped to pen the script, but unfortunately a storyline is being kept under wraps.

Considering it will be the 50th anniversary of “The Smurfs” it is only proper to expect a massive marketing campaign leading up to the release of the film, especially considering the show has not yet seen a release on DVD.
