DVD DOWNLOAD: #13

Check out DVD DOWNLOAD Issue #12 HERE

Yeah, I know, I am way late on this edition of the DVD DOWNLOAD. Things have been a bit hectic over here. Plus, who really missed the DOWNLOAD over the 4th of July weekend?

Anyway, we have some cool new titles to talk about today so let’s get to it.

ADDED THIS WEEK
The Wizard of Oz (2 and 3-Disc Editions)

(October 25th)

The biggest news of the week is probably that Warner Home Video is going to be releasing The Wizard of Oz once again on DVD, this time it will be a bit of a bigger collection as it will be available in both a 2-Disc and a 3-Disc set, so it really depends on how much you liked the film, but I think this will be a set MANY people will be buying. As for the special features, there has not yet been a formal announcement on the matter, as the news has come from The Hollywood Reporter, but here is what we know of so far:

· Brand new digital transfer of the original negative

· A newly remastered soundtrack

· Commentary with historian John Fricke

· Trivia games

· Sing-alongs

Four documentaries:

» The restoration process

» Outtakes and deleted scenes

» Composer Harold Arlen’s home movies made on the “Oz” set

» An “Oz Jukebox” of recording session materials, radio shows and promo spots

Exclusive to the 3-Disc set:

· New documentary on “Oz” author L. Frank Baum

· Five early feature film versions of “Oz”

· Reproductions of the invitation and program for the film’s premiere at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood

The Holy Girl

(September 6th)

Next we have the indie feature The Holy Girl. Now this is a film that not many people saw, myself included, but I think it looks like a good one and I will definitely be putting in a request to review it. The film explores the burgeoning sexuality and religious fervor of two teenage girls, Amalia and her best friend, Josefina. The film centers around the idea of understanding the temptation of good – and the evil it causes – while exploring the themes of sin, frustration and desire.

Honestly, this is not some porno feature about the Catholic church, it looks really good, if you don’t believe me check out the trailer here.

The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants

(September 27th)

Here we have one to make the young ladies in the audience happy as Warner Home Video has announced the release of The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants. As of right now we have no specs on the film or even a preorder link, so you are just going to have to wait, and just know the release date has been set for September 27th.

Mindhunters

(September 20th)

Here we have a feature that is apparently doing rather well overseas, at least it is getting a big push, and scooper ‘thebatsignal’ tells me there are even talks of a TV show based on the Dimension films release Mindhunters starring Val Kilmer, LL Cool J, Christian Slater, Will Kemp, Clifton Collins Jr. and Cassandra Bell.

The film centers around a group of eight young FBI profilers learning to hunt serial killers but what they don’t know is that hiding amongst them is a killer attempting to hunt them. As one by one the agents begin to disappear, none can be trusted. Each one is under suspicion. And they are all in mortal danger until, in the ultimate test of their crime-solving skills, they uncover the mysterious predator lurking in their midst.

The disc will be released on September 20th, below are the special features:

» Feature Commentary with Director Renny Harlin

» Profiling Mindhunters – A Behind-the Scenes Featurette

» Stunt Sequence Featurette

» A Director’s Walk Through Crimetown
Unleashed (Unrated and Rated)

(October 11th)

From Rogue Pictures comes Rated and Unrated editions of the Jet Li action-drama Unleashed. Raised as a dog the story centers around Danny (Li) raised to be a lethal fighting machine who fights in illegal gladiator-style fight clubs, where he earns lots of money for his owner/boss, Bart, as the undisputed champion. After a car accident that lands Bart in a coma, however, Danny meets a kind elderly blind piano tuner (Freeman) on the run because he knows secrets some bad guys don’t want known, who uses music to teach Danny some things about the world and about being human.

There aren’t any special features announced as of yet, but the discs will be released on October 11th.

Monster-in-Law

(August 30th)

Back to the romantic comedy genre and another film from J-Lo as this time she teams up with “Alias” star Michael Vartan and introduces Jane Fonda back to the big screen in Monster-In-Law. Now this film did quite well at the box-office as it played counterpart to the action of Star Wars Episode III and you can preorder it right now by clicking here.

The film will be released on DVD on August 30th, check out the special features listed below.

· Audio Commentary

· Deleted Scenes with optional director’s commentary

· Easter Eggs

Four Featurettes

· “Welcome Back Jane”

· “A Jennifer of All Trades”

· “Vartan the Man”

· “Trendsetters”

Crash

(September 6th )

Finally is a DVD I know several of you will be interested in. Even though I didn’t like it I knew instantly that many people would and that is Lions Gate’s Crash starring Sandra Bullock, Don Cheadle, Matt Dillon, Jennifer Esposito, Brendan Fraser, Jason Isaacs, Ludacris, Thandie Newton, Ryan Phillippe, Larenz Tate, Keith David, Nona M. Gaye, Michael Pena, Terrence Dashon Howard, Daniel Dae Kim and Jack McGee.

The film is quite a bit complicated to explain so let’s just say it is centered around race confrontations in the city of Los Angeles.

As of right now there are no special features announced and not even a preorder link, but stay tuned, we will put it up as soon as it is all available.

TV DVDs

Star Trek: Enterprise – The Complete Third Season

(September 27th)

First set out of our two new TV DVD sets added is Star Trek: Enterprise – The Complete Third Season. With the second season only days away Paramount has announced the third season from this cancelled series that saw a total of four seasons hit the television screen. Personally, after watching the first season I can’t see why the show was ever taken off the air, but I can only assume the writers had a few problems as they went on.

The set will be available on September 27th.

The Fresh Prince of Bel Air – The Complete Second Season

(October 11th)

Our second TV DVD is going back to Will Smith’s roots as the second season of The Fresh Prince of Bel Air is coming from Warner Home Video. The cocky kid from Philly is back with a whole new set of wild and wacky adventures. The set can be yours to own on October 11th.
