Morgan Freeman to Headline Action Film Down to a Sunless Sea

Morgan Freeman will star in Down to a Sunless Sea

According to Variety, Academy Award-winning actor Morgan Freeman (Million Dollar Baby, The Dark Knight Trilogy) has been cast as one of the leads in Focus Features’ Down to a Sunless Sea.

Described as a big action film similar to Air Force One, the original screenplay hails from David Gleeson, who was previously attached to write Fox Searchlight’s planned J.R.R. Tolkien biopic Tolkien back in 2013.

Although it is unknown if Freeman is, like Harrison Ford in that 1997 action hit, playing the President of the United States, he has taken the role before in 1998’s Deep Impact as well as acting President/Speaker of the House Allan Trumbull in 2013’s Olympus Has Fallen.

Freeman will next be seen in the Olympus sequel London Has Fallen on January 22, along with playing Sheik Ilderim in Timur Bekmambetov’s Ben-Hur remake. The 78-year-old icon will also co-star with Oscar-winning octogenarians Michael Caine and Alan Arkin in a remake of Martin Brest’s 1979 bank robbery comedy Going in Style for director Zach Braff.

Freeman and Lori McCreary’s company Revelations will produce Down to a Sunless Sea along with Bruce Cohen (Silver Linings Playbook, American Beauty).
