Austin Powers 4 ? Really?!?

On Saturday, there was a rumor in the Boston Globe of all places about Brazilian supermodel Gisele Bündchen playing the female lead in the next Austin Powers movie and that there is already a script, plus meetings impending, etc. (You can read that story here) Well, to steal a bit from “Saturday Night Live”, all we have to say here is, “Really!?”

You see, ComingSoon.net just attended a press conference with Michael McCullers for his new movie and directorial debut Baby Mama starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, and we figured that we might as well ask him about this rumored fourth installment of the franchise. After all, McCullers cut his teeth writing the screenplay for Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me and then collaborated with Mike Myers on the third installment, so surely he would know about an Austin Powers 4, right?

“I don’t know,” McCullers answered when we asked him directly about a fourth movie. “I see those rumors like everyone else. I think a lot of them are just rumors. I had not heard that particular rumor. I wait for the phone to ring on that one, you know what I mean? That’s my role in that.”

That’s not to say that Jay Roach and Mike Myers might not be moving ahead without McCullers’ involvement, since they knew he was finishing up his own movie, but it seems kinda odd for there to be talk about a fourth “Austin Powers” movie just weeks after the announcement that New Line was being folded into Warner Bros. and months before Myers’ return to live action comedy with The Love Guru. Or maybe Bünchen’s people just wanted to get her a bit of free press. Who knows what is true and how this might pan out but you’d think based on his previous involvement, McCullers would know something about a fourth movie if it actually had a finished script as reported over the weekend.

In the meantime, McCullers’ new movie Baby Mama opens on Friday, April 25, and we’ll have more stuff from the press conference next week.
