Richard Madden is Prince Charming in Disney’s Cinderella

The Rightful Throne: Richard Madden is Prince Charming

Richard Madden is a television star with minimal movie credits to his name, but director Kenneth Branagh assures us that Madden was always amongst the top contenders for the role of Prince Charming in the upcoming live action retelling of Disney’s Cinderella (set to release March 13th).

Unlike the leading lady, which was earmarked for Emma Watson who ultimately declined the role, Richard Madden was eyed from the early stages of the film as a potential candidate for the coveted male lead role.

Co-starring alongside Madden is actress Lily James who will play Cinderella. James is recognized for her television role as Lady Rose (“Downton Abbey’) while Madden is best known for his work on the Discovery Channel mini-series ‘Klondike” and HBO’s “Game of Thrones.” His work on television came with warm reception, but [SPOILER ALERT] his 21-episode reign as Robb Stark was cut short when he exited the series in the controversial Red Wedding episode.

Regardless, the role garnered him industry attention which may have tipped the casting direction for the Disney film in his favor.

Madden’s previous work in film include the poorly-received 2010 flick, Chatroom, A Promise, and a relatively small role in Complicity. That said, the 28-year-old Scotsman no doubt hopes that this could be the breakout role that propels him into larger roles on the big screen.

Speaking of the big screen, when asked about the storyline and how it stacks up to the 1950 Disney musical, Madden had this to say: “Very true to the tale of the story. There’s little changes happening now, so I’m not sure where it’s going to go, but it’s the story of Cinderella, we know it and it’s an amazing cast with an outstanding director, so it’s going to be really exciting.”

We’re excited too! While Madden certainly looks the part of the handsome prince, we can only wait until the film hits theatres to see how he’ll be received in one of Disney’s iconic roles.
