Willem Dafoe Joins Matt Damon in Epic The Great Wall

There is no word on whether this is the same role that Dafoe’s John Carter co-star Bryan Cranston was up for last year, as details are being kept under wraps. Dafoe is currently set to voice a role in the Pixar sequel Finding Dory, in addition to headlining My Hindu Friend for director Hector Babenco (Kiss of the Spider Woman)

The Great Wall centers on a British soldier (Damon) who comes to 15th century China with a group of mercenaries in order to bring back gunpowder to Europe. There they happen upon the hurried construction of the massive wall, which isn’t just to keep out the Mongols — there is something inhuman and more dangerous.

Originally to be helmed by Edward Zwick, the film was conceived by Legendary CEO Thomas Tull and Max Brooks, with a screenplay by Zwick, Marshall Herskovitz and Tony Gilroy. Production is set to begin in spring 2015, with Universal Pictures and Legendary releasing The Great Wall in 3D in the U.S. on Nov. 23, 2016.
