Terrence Malick’s latest movie Knight of Cups premiered earlier today at the 2015 Berlin Film Festival and Deadline reports that fledgling distributor Broad Green has picked up the U.S. distribution rights to the film as well as Malick’s next untitled film for a reported $7 million.
Malick has quietly been shooting the two films over the past few years with the likes of Christian Bale, Natalie Portman, Cate Blanchett and Joel Kinnaman all appearing in Knight of Cups with Portman joined by Ryan Gosling, Michael Fassbender, Rooney Mara and Benicio Del Toro in a second film (with the working title of Lawless). Although there’s been no plot or any other details available, Malick had been shooting a lot of footage in different locations over the year before going into post-production to finish Knight of Cups in time for Berlin.
The foreign sales for both films were handled at Berlin by FilmNation with Nicolas Gonda, Sarah Green and Ken Kao listed as producers for Knight of Cups.
This announcement comes just one week after Broad Green signed up with IMAX to finance and distribute another Malick film called Voyage of Time with Brad Pitt narrating.
This is the second big distribution deal to come out of Berlin following Lionsgate picking up Peter Sollett’s drama Freehold.
