On Monday, ComingSoon.net got a chance to talk to Will Ferrell about Universal’s upcoming Land of the Lost. Based on Sid & Marty Krofft’s 1970s TV series of the same name, the adventure-comedy will be directed by Brad Silberling (Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events).
The movie revolves around a disgraced paleontologist, his assistant and a macho tour guide who find themselves in a strange world inhabited by dinosaurs, monkey people and reptilian Sleestaks.
“It’s going to be kind of on the tone of ‘The English Patient,’ but with horribly frightening realistic dinosaurs. In fact, we only survive for 12 minutes of the film. It’s going to be more like a nature documentary,” Ferrell joked. On a more serious note, he said the movie is “going to be kind of hopefully ‘Jurrasic Park’ in terms of the quality. It’s not going to be so much a spoof. It’s going to be as real as possible and hopefully funny.”
“Talladega Nights” director Adam McKay said he had to choose between Land of the Lost or Step Brothers, a comedy which reunites “Talladega” stars Ferrell and John C. Reilly.
“It really became a choice between [‘Step Brothers’] or ‘Land of the Lost’ and I went with [‘Step Brothers’]. But God, I used to love ‘Land of the Lost.’ That was a painful movie to turn down,” McKay confessed, adding, “Just the idea of getting to design the Sleestak outfits. I was going to try to get Bill Laimbeer to do a Sleestak as a homage to his original one. But yeah, I had to choose between the two.”
Land of the Lost is scheduled to hit theaters on July 17, 2009.
