The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1 Scores $55 Million Opening Day

While The Hunger Games: Mockingjay – Part 1–this weekend’s only new movie in wide release–opened softer than the previous two installments in Lionsgate’s adaptation of Suzanne Collins’ series, no one is going to complain about a $55 million estimated opening day when that’s the highest gross for a single day this year, by a significant amount.

Signs were in place when the first part of the finale, starring Jennifer Lawrence, Liam Hemsworth and Josh Hutcherson, took in $17 million in Thursday previews, down $8 million from what The Hunger Games: Catching Fire did in the same period last year.

Still, that’s more grossed in one day than all but 11 movies grossed during their opening weekends this past year, and based on that amount, Mockingjay – Part 1 will probably end up with about 130 million for the weekend. That’s down more than $20 million from the previous installment’s opening weekend, but will still find it a place in the Top 15 domestic opening weekends of all time.

Check back tomorrow for the full box office report.
