Brad Pitt Targets Sci-Fi Survival Thriller Alpha

Although Steven Spielberg’s long-gestating adaptation of Daniel H. Wilson’s science fiction bestseller Robopocalypse appears to be in a holding pattern for the time being, The Hollywood Reporter today brings word that Wilson himself is now charting a different course to the big screen. He’s providing the screenplay (as well as the original idea) for a sci-fi survivalist thriller called Alpha.

Details on Alpha are currently few, although the story is being likened to a futuristic Jack London tale. It has also garnered the attention of Brad Pitt and his Plan B Productions. They’ve snagged the rights and have set newcomer Anthony Scott Burns to make his feature film debut. According to the outlet, Burns won the job after he was tasked with creating a short commercial for a fictional company within the film.

Burns, a Toronto-based filmmaker and musician, has posted a number of samples of his work on his Vimeo page, including his impressive short fan trailer for the unfortunately-not-real TRON: Destiny. You can also check out his short film “Manifold” in the player below.

There’s no word yet on whether or not he might star in some capacity, but Pitt will produce Alpha alongside Plan B’s Dede Gardner and Jeremy Kleiner. The actor, who is currently in theaters headlining David Ayer’s Fury, will next re-team with wife and Mr. & Mrs. Smith co-star, Angelina Jolie, for By the Sea. Jolie is both co-starring and directing from her own original screenplay.
