HBO Gets into the American Girl Business

Variety reports that HBO has made a deal with American Girl, the retailer that makes a line of realistic dolls, to create and distribute feature films, specials and documentaries based on them.

The biggest tie-in will be a full-length feature film which will start filming this summer, produced by Goldsmith-Thomas Productions and Julia Roberts’ Red Om Films.

The story will revolve around American Girl’s historical character Kit Kittredge and a 9-year-old girl who has to deal with hardships during the Great Depression.

Walden Media, originally set to finance the project, is no longer involved and has parted ways with American Girl.
