Catherine Zeta-Jones to Play Real-Life Colombian Drug Lord in The Godmother

Catherine Zeta-Jones has taken the title role in The Godmother, a biopic of Colombian drug lord Griselda Blanco. Deadline has the news, reporting that the film will be helmed by Eva Sørhaug, the writer/director behind 2012’s acclaimed Norweigian release, 90 Minutes.

Nicknamed La Madrina (which translates to “Black Widow”) for her infamous reputation that led to hundreds of violent assassinations, Blanco represented a rare female power player in the Medellin Cartel, responsible for a large portion of the drug trade that happened in Miami in the 70’s and early 80’s.

Frank Baldwin is providing the screenplay for The Godmother with Daniela Cretu producing for First Born Films. Nicholas Pileggi will serve as executive producer.

The Godmother plans to shoot in early 2015.
