Anne Rice’s The Vampire Chronicles Heads to Universal and Imagine

Universal Pictures and Imagine Entertainment have acquired the rights to Anne Rice’s “The Vampire Chronicles” book series, TheWrap reports. Brian Grazer will produce alongside Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci.

The first installment in the novels, Interview with the Vampire, was made into a film in 1994 that stars Tom Cruise and Brad Pitt. A second film followed, The Queen of the Damned, in 2002 with Aaliyah playing the eponymous bloodsucker and Stuart Townsend playing the vampire Lestat.

There’s no specific word yet on Universal’s plans for the series, although a remake of Interview with the Vampire is a very likely route for the studio to take.

The next literary chapter in “The Vampire Chronicles,” “Prince Lestat,” hits bookstores this fall.
