Tom Hanks Boards U-2 Spy Plane Incident Thriller, Steven Spielberg Eyes Director’s Chair

Director Steven Spielberg appears to be eyeing another project with leading man Tom Hanks. The Hollywood Reporter brings word that Hanks has signed on to headline an untitled Cold War thriller and that Spielberg is tentatively planning to helm.

Based on the true story of James Donovan, the project — scripted by Matt Charman — follows the American attorney who was tasked with negotiating the release of pilot Gary Powers in the wake of 1960’s U-2 spy plane incident.

Marc Platt is attached to produce.

Word of Spielberg’s potential involvement with this new thriller comes just days after news broke that Spielberg is also eyeing The Kidnapping of Edgardo Mortara as another potential directing project.
