Back in August, NBA star LeBron James created some speculative headlines when he, in response to a fan question on Twitter, declared his fondness for the 1996 Warner Bros. family animation/CGI hybrid film Space Jam.
“I love that movie,” he wrote in his original post. “Wish I could do Space Jam 2!”
Now it seems that the movie gods have smiled on James and granted his wish! Deadline reports that a Space Jam 2 is indeed on the way from Warner Bros. with James set to star alongside Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Tasmanian Devil and all the other classic “Looney Tunes” characters. Charlie and Willie Ebersol will develop and produce.
Although the original Space Jam was not a hit with critics, it grossed over $230 million worldwide and the sequel has nostalgia riding in its favor, likely hoping to capture both a new child audience and the now mid-20’s audience that was targeted for the original. WB is also coming off the tremendous success of their The LEGO Movie, which has managed to do just that, already having grossed more than $200 million worldwide.
UPDATE: Or not? ESPN’s Brian Windhorst tweeted that there’s no truth to the above report…
Well it was fun while it lasted. LeBron sources refute Deadline report, there's no Space Jam 2 or Warner Bros. project in works
