Alfonso Cuarón’s Gravity topped the box office for a third straight weekend with an estimated $31 million, a drop in ticket sales of just 28.2%. Starring Sandra Bullock and George Clooney, the space thriller has now earned $170.6 million domestically. Of the $31 million domestic gross, $7.4 million came from 318 IMAX theaters. The North American total for IMAX runs is $38 million and global total is now $49 million. Overseas, the Warner Bros. release was also No. 1 for the third consecutive time, adding $33.5 million from 51 markets and bringing its international total to $114.2 million. Made for $100 million, Gravity has earned an impressive $284.8 million worldwide after three weeks.

The Paul Greengrass thriller Captain Phillips, starring Tom Hanks, remained in second place with $17.3 million, dropping just 32.7% in ticket sales from its first weekend. The $55 million Columbia Pictures film has reached $53.3 million domestically after 10 days. Captain Phillips also debuted in 11 overseas markets this weekend in which it took in $9.1 million.

MGM and Screen Gems’ Carrie remake, starring Chloë Grace Moretz and Julianne Moore, debuted in third place with an estimated $17 million at 3,157 theaters for an average of $5,385 million per theater. The studios said they were expecting the movie to come in under $20 million but that they were hoping it would have opened to a bit more. The Kimberly Peirce-directed film cost only $30 million to make, however, so it should be fine.

Sony Pictures Animation’s Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs 2 dropped a spot to fourth place with $10.1 million for a four-week domestic total of $93.1 million.

Rounding out the top five was the new action-thriller Escape Plan, starring Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger. The film earned $9.8 million from 2,833 theaters for an average of $3,399 per site.

Also opening in 1,769 theaters was WikiLeaks thriller The Fifth Estate, but the DreamWorks release only managed to take in $1.7 million in eighth place – that’s a dismal $969 per theater. Directed by Bill Condon, the $28 million-budgeted film stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Daniel Brühl.

Other films opening this weekend were I’m in Love with a Church Girl, starring Ja Rule and Adrienne Bailon, which earned $1 million from 457 theaters, and the critically-acclaimed 12 Years a Slave, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michael Fassbender, Benedict Cumberbatch and Brad Pitt, which brought in $960,000 from 19 theaters for an average of $50,526 per theater.
