Liam Hemsworth Joins Cut Bank

Kilburn Media has announced the start of production on Cut Bank, a thriller directed by Matt Shakman (“Mad Men,” “Six Feet Under”) that has also added Liam Hemsworth (The Hunger Games, The Expendables 2) to its cast.

The film also stars two-time Academy Award nominee John Malkovich (RED, In the Line of Fire), Academy Award winner Billy Bob Thornton (Bad Santa, Monster’s Ball), Teresa Palmer (Warm Bodies, I Am Number Four), Cannes Film Festival 2013’s Best Actor winner and Academy Award nominee Bruce Dern (Nebraska, Django Unchained), Oliver Platt (“The Big C,” Love & Other Drugs) and Golden Globe nominee Michael Stuhlbarg (A Serious Man, Hitchcock.

From an acclaimed Black List script by Roberto Patino (“Sons of Anarchy”), Cut Bank is the story of 25-year-old Dwayne McLaren (Hemsworth), a former-athlete-turned-auto-mechanic, who dreams of getting out of Cut Bank, Montana, the coldest town in America. But his efforts to do so set in motion a deadly series of events that change his life and the character of the town forever.

Cut Bank is produced by Laura Rister (Lovelace, Margin Call), Academy Award winner Edward Zwick (Shakespeare in Love, The Last Samurai), Dan Cohen (The Spectacular Now) and Mickey Barold (Corman’s World). Kilburn Media is financing the picture along with its Alberta-based partner, Edmonton Economic Development Corporation, with Kilburn’s Mark Manuel and Ted O’Neal overseeing production for the financiers. WME and Untitled Entertainment are co-representing domestic rights. Canada’s eOne will distribute Cut Bank in that country and represents the film for international sales, having already sold several territories.

The distinguished production team includes director of photography Ben Richardson (Beasts of the Southern Wild), Academy Award-nominated editor Carol Littleton (E.T. The Extra-Terrestrial, Places in the Heart), production designer Laura Fox (500 Days of Summer) and eight-time Academy Award nominee and Emmy winner James Newton Howard (Michael Clayton, The Sixth Sense) as composer.

Stated Rister, “Roberto has written a uniquely thrilling, darkly comic and incredibly soulful script that has attracted a first-class cast and crew. We’re honored to be part of the talented team that will bring this timeless story to life.”

Added Manuel, “Kilburn Media and our partners at the EEDC are excited about this great team coming together for Matt Shakman, truly a rising star director.”

Principal photography began on June 12, 2013 in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.
