The Congress, Ari Folman’s follow-up to his critically-acclaimed animated drama Waltz with Bashir, has released a trailer in advance of its debut at Cannes later this week. Check it out in the player below, courtesy of The Film Stage.
Based on Solaris author Stainslav Lem’s “The Futurological Congress,” the novel’s story follows the adventures of Ijon Tichy (who would go on to appear in later Lem works as well) as he’s invited to attend a futorological convention that leads to him visiting a world that blends and parodies elements of futurology. In the film version, Robin Wright replaces Tichy, playing herself as an actress whose identity is purchased by a film studio so that her likeness may exist in perpetuity, leading to glimpses at an animated blend of future visions, blending utopias and dystopia.
Harvey Keitel, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Danny Huston, Sami Gayle, Michael Stahl-David and Paul Giamatti also star.
