The final studio to present at 2013’s CinemaCon, Lionsgate celebrated a record-breaking 2012 by debuting the first-ever trailer for the forthcoming Ender’s Game, set for release on November 1 in 2D theaters and in IMAX. Fans will be able to catch the trailer on the big screen before May’s Star Trek Into Darkness.
Hosted by Kevin Hart, the presentation also touted his upcoming comedy tour documentary Let Me Explain, revealing a new Red Band trailer and announcing that another film is in the works, to be titled Quick and Easy, presumably based on his comedy tour of the same name.
Tyler Perry’s A Madea Christmas revealed an anti-cell phone message with Perry dressed as his popular character scolding audience members for using phones during movies.
Stars Morgan Freeman and Isla Fisher came on stage to intro Now You See Me‘s latest trailer. The Louis Leterrier film also stars Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine and Common and hits theaters on May 31.
RED 2 also showcased a new trailer. Largely similar to the first trailer, this new one played up Anthony Hopkins’ character, an eccentric scientist that Bruce Willis’ Frank Moses has to break out of a Russian mental institution. It looks like Hopkins is having a lot of fun with the role (his character literally doesn’t seem to know that he’s not a young man) and he offers a very, very animated performance.
The Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger starrer Escape Plan showed off its first trailer, largely focusing on the storyline that has Stallone’s Ray Breslin, an expert at breaking out prisons, being kidnapped and sent to a new, experimental jail. The prison itself has all the cells as as The Silence of the Lambs-style glass cubes, all set up on different levels of metal scaffolding with guards wearing creepy all-black masks.
Schwarzenegger plays Emil Rottmayer, an inmate already in the prison who reluctantly teams with Breslin to win their freedom. They’ve definitely worked in a few one-liners, too. At one point, Stallone punches Schwarzenegger and he shoots back, “You hit like a vegetarian!”
Escape Plan hits theaters September 13.
The big reveal of the presentation was Ender’s Game, welcoming stars Harrison Ford, Hailee Steinfeld and, Ender himself, Asa Butterfield to the stage to premiere the film’s first trailer, which features lots of shots of Ender’s zero-G training, battles with the Formic race both in space and within a planet’s upper atmosphere and lots of dialogue from Ford’s Hyrum Graff and Ben Kingsley’s Mazer Rackham (the latter of whom has his character’s very intricate face tattoo).
