Resident Evil Characters Guide

Take a look at The Final Chapter’s key players in our Resident Evil characters guide

Sony Pictures Resident Evil franchise returns to theaters later this month with its sixth — and seemingly final — big-screen installment. The series, the all-time highest-grossing film series based on a video game, follow Alice in her fight against the Umbrella Corporation, an evil bioengineering pharmaceutical company at the center of the franchise. Their T-virus escapes containment and infects humans and animals alike, turning them into zombies and monsters. This eventually decimates the human population and a true zombie apocalypse ensues.

Resident Evil: The Final Chapter was written and directed by Paul W.S. Anderson, who wrote all the films and directed all of them except Apocalypse and Extinction. In the film, Alice returns to Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is gathering its forces for a final strike against the only remaining survivors of the apocalypse.

Before Resident Evil: The Final Chapter hits theaters on January 27th, let’s take a look at some of the returning Resident Evil characters you might meet.

Alice (Milla Jovovich)

Alice is the undisputed heroine of the Resident Evil franchise. Though she never appeared in the video games, Milla Jovovich’s portrayal of Alice is a signature of the film franchise. She is an unmitigated badass. When we first meet Alice, she has amnesia, but she slowly learns that she was part of Umbrella Corporation’s private security firm. At some point, she was experimented on and gained superhuman powers when the T-virus bonded with her cells and didn’t cause the zombie mutation. She was cloned in the hopes that her cloning would result in a cure, but instead it just created issues for Umbrella Corp.

You can follow Alice’s journey through the six films in the franchise with our Resident Evil story recap.

Jill Valentine (Sienna Guillory)

Based on a character in the video game series, Jill is initially an ally of Alice’s. She made her debut in the second film, Apocalypse, and later returned for Afterlife and Retribution under the control of the Umbrella Corporatio. Forced to lead in a massive battle against Alice, Jill Valentine eventually she breaks free from her mind control and is said to make a cameo in The Final Chapter.

Red Queen (Michaela Dicker, Megan Charpentier, Ave Merson-O’Brian, Ever Gabo Anderson)

An ode to HAL 9000 from 2001: A Space Odessey, the Red Queen is the AI antagonist that runs The Hive, Umbrella Corp.’s genetic research facility where the T-virus is created. The holographic avatar was designed to look like the daughter of Umbrella’s head programmer. While the Red Queen killed the Hive employees who were exposed to the T-virus, and later killed anyone who tried to get in or out of the Hive, she did help the survivors escape the Hive in order for them to reset her main circuit breakers. The Red Queen has a “sister AI” named the White Queen.

Albert Wesker (Jason O’Mara and Shawn Roberts)

Wesker is the head of Umbrella Corp. A main character in the video games, he does not appear in the films until the third movie. In the fourth film, Wesker shows superhuman abilities, such as strength and speed, and has red glowing eyes. Wesker eventually defects from Umbrella Corp. when the Red Queen takes over in Retribution. In The Final Chapter, Wesker will play the “anti-hero.”

Dr. Isaacs (Iain Glen)

Umbrella scientist Dr. Sam Isaacs is the one who gave Alice her superpowers, activating “Project Alice.” Isaacs believes that a T-virus cure can be created from Alice’s blood. In his experimentations, Isaacs creates a new “super zombie” breed. When one of the super zombies infects Isaacs, he injects himself with massive doses of anti-virus. Isaacs is shot by one of Wesker’s goons, and that activates the mutation that turns Isaacs into Tyrant. Despite now being a monster, he retains his personality and mental focus. Though Tyrant/Isaacs is killed in Extinction, Iain Glen is said to return in The Final Chapter as Dr. Alexander Isaacs. A twin brother, perhaps?

Claire Redfield (Ali Larter)

We first meet Claire in Extinction, as the leader of a group of survivors who teams with Alice in order to get to a rumored safe haven in Alaska. She is briefly under Umbrella’s control with a device similar to what was used on Jill Valentine, but saved by Alice. She is presumed dead and/or captured by Umbrella, but will return in The Final Chapter.

Ada Wong (Li Bingbing)

First introduced into the film series in Retribution, Ada is an “associate” of Wesker’s who, like him, has defected from Umbrella. While Ada survived Retribution and in 2014 was said to be returning to the franchise, no announcement of her involvement has been made since. Whether or not she’ll still make some kind of appearance in The Final Chapter remains to be seen, although Ada has been absent from the film’s marketing up until now.
