Joe and Anthony Russo Talk Captain America: Civil War and Infinity War

It seems strange to think about it now, but there was a time when Joe and Anthony Russo seemed like a strange choice to direct a superhero movie. But the brothers, who once brought you the Owen Wilson comedy You, Me and Dupree, knocked Captain America: The Winter Soldier out of the park in 2014, and now they are back two years later with the most ambitious film in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Captain America: Civil War, which pits all of Marvel’s superheroes against each other in a no holds barred battle of ideologies, and superpowers.

Strangely enough, another high-profile superhero fight movie emerged in 2016, one that also spoke to national anxieties which were personified by costume crimefighters. We sat down with Joe and Anthony Russo to consider the thematic and dramatic similarities between Captain America: Civil War and Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice, and to consider why filmmakers are so interested in deconstructing superheroes at this moment in time.

But we also looked into the future, and asked Joe and Anthony Russo about their plans for Infinity War, a two-part event that is being set up as the culmination of every ongoing thread in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The film is rumored to have over 60 characters, so we talked about how the heck they plan to make that work, and the Russo Brothers replied that this new film will have a very unconventional story structure that will jump between the storylines of multiple heroes.
