As thirteen-year-old twin siblings (real life twin brothers András Gyémánt and László Gyémánt) endure the harshness of WWII in a village on the Hungarian-German border, they hedge their survival on studying and learning from the evil surrounding them. Left in the care of their terrifying grandmother (Piroska Molnar, Taxidermia) the boys begin to train their bodies becoming desensitized to the value of human life all while documenting their transformation by writing in the notebook left to them by their father.
