It’s a great year for bad kids. From the Austrian nightmares of Goodnight Mommy to the diseased brats of Cooties, to this: The Boy. A meditative and dread-fueled look at a 9 year-old sociopath, the SXSW premiere from director Craig William Macneill and writer Clay McLeod Chapman is a creative take on the slasher, as well as an engrossing dark child story. Chiller Films and SpectreVision have announced an August release for the film, as well as a new trailer.
In The Boy, “Its the summer of 1989. Nine-year-old Ted Henley (Jared Breeze) and his father John (David Morse) are the proprietors of The Mtn. Vista Motel, a crumbling resort buried in the mountains of the American West. Since Ted’s mother left, John has drifted into despondencybecoming a living ghost, haunting the motelleaving Ted to fend for himself. In this isolation, unchecked by the bounds of parenting, Teds darker impulses begin to manifest. The arrival of a mysterious drifter, William Colby (Rainn Wilson), captivates young Ted and the two form a unique friendship – setting the stage for Teds final, unnerving metamorphosis.”
