Guillermo del Toro on Crimson Peak, The Strain, Pacific Rim 2 and more

It wouldn’t be Comic-Con if filmmaker and all-around horror enthusiast Guillermo del Toro wasn’t there to do a couple of panels and get his fans excited for what he’s got coming up.

This year, he has three major projects, including the upcoming Crimson Peak with Legendary Pictures and Universal, a gothic period horror film starring Tom Hiddleston, Jessica Chastain, Mia Wasikowska and Charlie Hunnam. On top of that, the epic “The Strain” returns for its second season on FX this coming Sunday and he has a new book called Trollhunters, which was originally planned as an animated feature for DreamWorks.

On top of that, del Toro has already been working on pre-production for Pacific Rim 2, the sequel to his 2013 monster vs. robots movie, which he’ll be shooting in Toronto and China later this year for a summer 2017 release.

In the video interview below, we talked about the inspiration for doing Crimson Peak, the joys of R-rated horror and the state of horror in general. We also talked about the possible directions one could take with Pacific Rim 2 and how his FX show “The Strain” is starting to branch away from the books. We also touched upon The Haunted Mansion and Dark Universe, two long-in-development movies, to get a progress update on those. He also wants to do a smaller black and white film sometime after Pacific Rim 2 as well.

Crimson Peak opens nationwide on Friday, October 16, Pacific Rim 2 is scheduled for August 4, 2017 and if you can’t wait that long for more GDT, then he directed the first 11 minutes of the second season of FX’s “The Strain” which premieres this Sunday, July 12.
