Tom at the Farm: Xavier Dolan’s Psychothriller Looks Great [Trailer]

Xavier Dolan, the celebrated young filmmaker behind Laurence Anyways and Mommy, took a brief detour between said films and crafted rural psychothriller Tom at the Farm. Though it’s taken some time to find U.S. release, Tom at the Farm is nearly upon us and distributor Amplify has put together a thrilling new preview.

In the film, “After the sudden death of his lover, Guillaume (Caleb Landry Jones – Heaven Knows What), Tom (Xavier Dolan) travels from his home in the city to a remote country farm for the funeral. Upon arriving, he’s shocked to find that Guillaume’s family knows nothing about him and was expecting a woman in his place. Torn between his own grief and that of the family, Tom keeps his identity a secret but soon finds himself increasingly drawn into a twisted, sexually-charged game by Guillaume’s aggressive brother (Pierre-Yves Cardinal), who suspects the truth.”

Tom at the Farm looks frankly terrific, a stark thriller of family and relationship secrets, and an outsider entering dangerous scenario. There’s an eerie chill to the atmosphere clashing with the clearly physical, harsh tête-à-tête Tom enters with Guillaume.

Amplify, who currently has the great Felt out now, is releasing Tom at the Farm  on August 14th. It’s one of my most anticipated of the summer.
