Alex Garland has ‘Weird Idea’ for 28 Months Later

Is a long-hoped for third film in the 28 Days Later series moving along? In January, 28 Days Later writer and Ex Machina director Alex Garland revealed he, director Danny Boyle and producer Andrew Macdonald had been “talking seriously about it.” Now, midst press talks for the brilliant Ex Machina, Garland confirms he’s come up with an idea for the film—many refer to it as 28 Months Later, but we’ll see—one that Macdonald is running with.

“About two years ago, Danny started collaborating on the potential to make Trainspotting 2, another sequel,” Garland tells The Playlist. “In that conversation, an idea for 28 Months arrived. I had a funny idea. I had a sort of weird idea that popped into my head. Partly because of a trip I’d taken. I had this thought, and I suggested it to Andrew and Danny, but I also said I don’t want to work on it. I don’t really want to play a role, and Andrew said, ‘Leave it to me.’ So he’s gone off and is working on it.”

Garland doesn’t expand further on story details, but it seems Macdonald is actively toiling on 28 Months Later, now 13 years after the first, invigorating film hit. That 2002 film, directed by Boyle and starring Cillian Murphy, saw a ‘rage’ virus infect the UK. Its very good 2007 sequel, 28 Weeks Later, starred Robert Carlyle, Rose Byrne, Idris Elba, Jeremy Renner and Imogen Poots and saw the UK attempt to rebuild. Juan Carlos Fresnadillo directed.
