James Wan to Produce The Entity Remake

Director James Wan and his Conjuring scripters Carey & Chad Hayes are teaming for a remake of Sidney J. Furie’s frightening, 1982 based on a true story horror, The Entity. Wan will produce with Roy Lee (The Ring, Poltergeist 2015) for New Line, while the Hayes write a new version of the film, about a woman sexually assaulted by a poltergeist.

Furie’s The Entity is a terrifying touchstone for many. The film stars Barbara Hershey as Carla Moran, a single mother who’s violently raped by a ghost in her home and enlists two parapsychologists to help. Wan won’t direct the new Entity, he gets underway on The Conjuring 2: The Enfield Poltergeist this year.

We tend to hope a remake simply justifies its existence, but The Entity has more to live up to, given its subject matter. Sexual abuse and assualt is so present and rampant, yet still underreported because survivors remain questioned and disbelieved. Meanwhile, vicious online threats take on a faceless/entity-like quality. The film will need to handle and do justice to that.

If you’re in NYC and have never seen The Entity, the powerful film will screen this June as part of Anthology Film Archives’ This is Celluloid series. [THR]
