I Am Not a Serial Killer Adaptation Starts Production

Director Billy O’Brien is in Missouri, underway on the film adaptation of novelist Dan Wells’ I Am Not a Serial Killer, starring Christopher Lloyd, Max Records (Where the Wild Things Are) and Laura Fraser.

Wells’ 2009 novel and the film concerns the young John Wayne Cleaver, who recognizes the violent impulses in himself and fights directly against them. Unfortunately that doesn’t stop his Midwestern hometown from pointing the blame when a serial killer shows up. John soon takes the investigation upon himself.

Wells followed I Am Not a Serial Killer with Mr. Monster, I Don’t Want to Kill You, Next of Kin and this year’s The Devil’s Only Friend. Of adapting the first book, director O’Brien says, “Dan Wells’ icky dark and funny novel to the big screen is like getting to play all day and being here in Minnesota, the home of the Coens and the setting for Fargo is inspiring us all. I have a fantastic team around me, some amazing actors and plenty of warm clothes!”

O’Brien previously helmed Irish horror Isolation, the 2005 film which features Badadook lead Essie Davis. I Am Not a Serial Killer is being shot by Robbie Ryan, who was cinematographer on this year’s Michael Fassbender-starring Sundance entry Slow West, which looks utterly fantastic. [Screen Daily]
