Comic-Con: Alex Aja Offers Details on The Pyramid – The Descent Meets Indiana Jones

I just sat down with the director, who has given us High Tension and The Hills Have Eyes, to talk not just about the adaptation but what he’s got on the way both on the producing front.

Recently, we learned a film he produced for director Gregory Levasseur, The Pyramid, got a release date from Fox: December 5th. Ashley Hinshaw, Denis O’Hare, Christa Nicola, James Buckley and Daniel Amerman star.

“We shot the movie at the same time as Horns,” Aja explains. “During prep on Horns I was going to Morocco to help Greg. The Pyramid was supposed to be PG-13, but it was too intense for the MPAA. We didn’t want to change the movie, so it turned into an R-rated movie. The movie’s really cool. The story is based on true fact. American archeologists use a satellite to X-ray the Egyptian desert. In the film, they find an Egyptian pyramid, bigger than any one we know, buried in the sand and they find a way to get in. The Egyptian authority asks them to leave and they have 24 hours to go see what’s inside and they shouldn’t do that. It’s an adventure type movie, but pretty intense. This is The Descent with an Indiana Jones vibe.”

Aja says that he has recently finished producing another film for Fox that was shot in India. He would not reveal the title, but perhaps it is The Other Side of the Door from director Johannes Roberts starring The Walking Dead‘s Sarah Wayne Callies?
