The Walking Dead is going to get a spin-off in 2015 and here we are in late 2013 already fielding rumors. Let's begin with a quote (that TVLine brought to my attention that I thought was amusing. Creator Robert Kirkman was quoted as saying, "The spin-off has to be a show worthy of existing, or else we’ve all sold out.”
Well, some might say the "sell out" has already happened considering the monstrous wave of merchandise and tie-ins that surround the show, but okay…
Touching on the aforementioned rumors, TVLine is hearing that the spin-off might be a "prequel."
There’s increasing buzz that the offshoot will be a prequel of sorts, one that would chronicle the early days of the epidemic and the effort to contain it. (An AMC rep declined to comment.)
Nothing feels more unnecessary and generic (at this point) than a prequel story. Is the creative team behind this series so dear to Rick and his merry band of survivors that they don't want to take the risk of telling another story of survival in another part of the country or world? Imagine the "series cross-over" potential!
