George Romero’s Empire of the Dead Coming from Marvel Comics in January

“It’s a comic book, which means we don’t have to go out and shoot the stuff,” Romero told USA Today. “You can let your imagination run wild and do pretty much anything you want, assuming it’s within the bounds of decency.”

Romero previously teased the series by saying the zombies would be “advancing even a little further” within its story, hit the jump to find out exactly what he meant by that and to see some sample art.

Branching off of other ideas he covered in some of his previous movies, the series will try and tackle the question of humans and zombies co-existing in the world together.

“These zombies are starting to show sparks of real care and concern for each other,” Romero said. “I’m not going to go all the way to Omega Man where they take over the world, but I’m having a lot of fun with it. We’ve got some new rules and new characters, and we’re taking it in a completely different direction.

The series was originally written as a 300 page screenplay which George has previously said he might turn into a novel as well. Check out the first bit of art for the series below!
