Jason Blum: Town That Dreaded Sundown Redo Very ‘Meta’ and Ryan Murphy-esque

During the interviews we conducted – which will run closer to the Insidious sequel’s release – we spoke to producer Jason Blum who gave us a status report on The Town That Dreaded Sundown which he is producing with American Horror Story‘s Ryan Murphy.

The redo, directed by American Horror Story’s Alfonso Gomez-Rejon, stars Addison Timlin, Travis Tope, Veronica Cartwright, Gary Cole and Joshua Leonard.

In this film, Timlin plays a young girl who survives a copycat massacre at the film’s annual tribute screening and sets out to solve the mystery of who’s recreating the unsolved Sackhead murders, using clues from her own past.

“We wrapped four days ago and I just saw Alfonso on the set of another movie in New York.  He’s going off to American Horror Story, I think he’s directing the first episode,” Blum told us.  “He’s cutting [Town] down in Louisiana and Ryan and I are psyched about the movie.  We’re going to see a cut of it soon.  The ‘meta’ angle is a big part of the movie in that the original movie is referenced a lot as is the true crime.  It’s pretty self-referential and Ryan Murphy-esque.  He brought me the movie and wanted to make the movie and he’s got a very unique voice.”

And what is that voice to Blum?  “That voice is in Nip/Tuck, American Horror Story and Glee, although they’re all very different genres, I think he is amazing at connecting to the oddest and strangest things about human behavior whether it’s funny, or grotesque or sad.  It’s incredibly unique.  I have as much respect for him as any creative writer or director out there.  His thoughts really resonate.”
