Universal and Blumhouse Productions scored big with The Purge, the home invasion thriller starring Ethan Hawke. The film topped the summer box office with an estimated $36.3 million, beating out The Internship which was also opening this weekend.
The Purge is already considered a success considering the cost of the film itself was between $3-4 million. Granted, you have to take into account the advertising budget Universal pumped into promotions, still, the film did quite well.
Don’t be surprised if this gives that rumored sequel some momentum.
