Greg Kinnear has the good looks and charm that help him have a Ted Bundy quality about him, which was perfect for his role as Wayne Collins in The Gift. Kinnears character is the fiancé of a missing local girl, and he is more than willing to cooperate with the investigation to find his true love. His kindness and emotional state make the audience and the films characters overlook his connection to the girl, and his attractiveness only made people look past him even more. On the outside, his character did not look like a killer; however, when his intentions are discovered, his evilness makes sense as it begins to seep through his façade.
Moviegoers fell in love with Macaulay Culkin in Home Alone. He was adorable, funny, and seemingly innocent. But, the past has proved that it is the innocent ones that you need to watch out for. Culkins good-boy looks and charm were perfect for his role as Henry in The Good Son, a bastard child set on making everyones lives miserablejust for his own enjoyment. His unassuming presence mixed with his ability to manipulate situations made him the perfect villain, because he knew how to play the game without getting caught. Culkins performance in The Good Son was evil, but despite his immoral ways, he was still able to make the audience second-guess their feelings about him and almost feel guilty over his fate.
One look at Joel David Moore and one would assume that he couldnt handle his own in a fight. While that may be true (or not), just because he doesnt look dangerous, it doesnt mean that he cant be. In Spiral, his character Mason is a loner with a lot of mental issues. When he meets a girl hes interested in, his issues become clear in violent ways. While an individual may look harmless on the outside, you never know what is going on inside their head. Peoples minds can be monstrous and sometimes its only a matter of time before those disruptive thoughts lead to harmful actions. Moores character in Spiral is the perfect example of an evil you wouldnt expect, because you cant necessarily see it from the outside.
Ellen Page charmed audiences as a witty pregnant teen in Juno but before that, she was a vigilante against pedophiles in Hard Candy. Just like Patrick Wilsons character Jeff, audiences never would have pegged Page as a vengeful girl with a mission to inflict pain. At first her character appears as though she is going to be the films victim; however, we are quickly proven wrong as the intelligent teen meticulously maps out exactly how she is going to ruin Jeffs life and does so with glee. Although her character was committing said acts on a horrible and deserving individual, her character still breaks the law and actually devised the horrific plan to a T, making audiences realize that she has mental issues of her own.
