Five Horror Movies Where I Was ‘Late to the Party’

Halloween

A Nightmare on Elm Street came first for me, then Friday the 13th Part IV.  Halloween and my undying appreciation for it didn’t arrive until my junior year of high school.

I knew of Michael Myers and I have vivid recollections of drawing my own versions of the posters in elementary and middle school (yeah, I was a weird kid, fascinated by shit I wasn’t allowed to see).  During a middle school Halloween dance, they played the Halloween theme and I fell in love.

Unfortunately, I didn’t see the marriage of said theme and John Carpenter’s film until years later.  I found it quite tame in comparison to some of the stuff I had already seen, but it was masterful nonetheless.  Later, for Christmas, my folks bought me the Criterion Laserdisc.  Good times.
