Exclusive: Screenwriter John Spaihts on the Mummy Reboot

Shock’s beloved leader Ryan Rotten clearly isn’t into that idea, as you may have read in his The Rotten Truth column last week.

Ryan may be happier with the fact this new version of The Mummy is looking to return it to its roots (as promised by Spaihts when his involvement was announced) and be more of a horror movie than the Stephen Sommers/Rob Cohen action movies.

“I’m really excited to write something scary,” Spaihts told us when we spoke last week, presumably being forgetful that Prometheus is meant to be in the same space horror arena as Alien, and when we asked him if he was a bigger fan of the Universal Monsters movies of the ‘30s or the more recent action-adventure movies, he gave us a rather diplomatic response: “They both have their virtues and they’ve all been tremendously popular films and really influential in the popular culture. I would hope to pluck some of the elements of both of those series.”

That sounds fairly promising to us, because maybe this will be a movie that is more about the living Mummy killing people again rather than having Brendan Fraser trying to get along with his wife or kid and involve Scorpion Kings and other similar ideas.

Look for the rest of our interview with Spaihts in bits an pieces over the next couple weeks both here and on ComingSoon.net.
