“While we only did six episodes, each episode is ‘monster size,'” creator Adam Green tells Shock Till You Drop. “Each episode is really the equivalent of two. A traditional sitcom might be between 21 and 24 minutes without commercials and our episodes between 35 and 45 minutes. It’s like an extended episode each week. And what was cool about that is we were able to fit in more guest stars, more gore moments and more of everything.”
The director of Frozen and Hatchet co-stars in the series with Joe Lynch (Knights of Badassdom, Wrong Turn 2). The two play Holliston, Massachusetts locals who run their own public access horror program and aspire to be filmmakers. Corri English and Laura Ortiz play their girlfriends. Dee Snider, Oderus from GWAR, Tony Todd and many others pop up for this blend of humor and horror.
“I hope I always get to do this because it’s going to be harder to write something shorter,” Green went on to say. “It’s harder to condense everything and keep it short. That’s the beauty of FEARnet is that this is their first original show, it’s not like a major network with a new show you have to fit in with other shows and this certain box with a time crunch. Here, it’s a blank canvas. They didn’t have to be 20 minutes or 30 minutes – if we felt we didn’t like a joke or enough was enough, we could cut it or make it shorter or make things longer if we liked how stuff played. I have no clue if the next season will be the same way. We might do traditional half hours or we’ll stick with this if the response is good.”
Green is presently taking Holliston on tour; at the same time, however, he’s in pre-production on Hatchet 3 with director BJ McDonnell.
“Victor Crowley started coming back to life this week and we hit the ground running. By the last week of April we should start filming,” Green said. “It’s important that I’m there for this, I don’t want to just be a producer giving them notes. I’m going to be with them helping make this movie and making sure it stays on track in the way I want it to be and the way BJ wants it to be. I think it’s just what the doctor ordered, getting some new blood in the director’s chair. Especially with what I went through last time with the movie getting pulled from theaters and that whole thing. Now, to be continuing this story with someone who loves this series and is excited – not that I wouldn’t have been excited to come back, but there’s something about being a proud parent and watching something bring passion to this. It’s amazing to feed off that. One of the things about the second film is that it was so ambitious for the budget, it was half of the budget of the first film, but twice the size. It was really hard to do, but I’m happy with what we pulled off. This film is going to connect with the other two – I don’t want to give away too much – but this is like the climatic action finale piece, if you will. We’ll learn more about Crowley – who’s really pissed off.”
