Paranormal Activity Scares Up Bigger Box Office Numbers

Stepfather opens at number five

Oren Peli’s Paranormal Activity grossed an estimated $20 million this weekend, sliding from last week’s fourth spot at the box office to number three. It has taken in $33 million to date.

Spike Jonze’s Where the Wild Things Are came in at number one during the weekend, but it’s Peli’s supernatural indie flick that is still generating success. Paranormal opened wider and is now in 760 theaters. It’s expected to go nation-wide next week taking on Saw VI.

Meanwhile, The Stepfather, Screen Gems’ remake of the ’80s film, opened at number five with $12.3 million. And Zombieland has now taken in a total of $60 million. The zom-com, starring Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, took a drop this weekend from number two to number seven at the box office.
