Rec Remake at Screen Gems

Poughkeepsie directors on board

That didn’t take long.

Rights for Jaume Balagueró and Paco Plaza’s Spanish horror film Rec (to be released by Filmax) have fallen into the hands of Screen Gems and a remake is in the works with The Poughkeepsie Tapes‘ John Erick Dowdle and Drew Dowdle writing and directing.

Sounding like a contained version of David Cronenberg’s Rabid, the Americanized Rec centers on a downtown Los Angeles apartment building which is quarantined after a deadly and highly contagious strain of rabies breaks out. Story is said to be told from the point of view of a reporter and her cameraman who are trapped within the structure.

Vertigo’s Roy Lee and Doug Davison are producing with Sergio Aguero.

“Horror may be waning, but this is such a unique concept that I’m certain it will cut through all the blood and glut of recent horror in the marketplace,” says Screen Gems prez Clint Culpepper.
