The Bates Motel Opening for Business

Vertigo Ent. sparks to television prospects

Roy Lee and Doug Davison’s Vertigo Entertainment is taking a momentary pause from their reign over just about every J-horror property sitting in their “Americanization” cannon for a look at horror’s iconic mama’s boy: Norman Bates.

The Hollywood Reporter says Vertigo has struck up a first-look television deal with Lionsgate (the two entities are at work on The Eye remake) and will take the plunge into scripted TV with “The Bates Motel.”

Is Universal involved? You bet your ass they are. The series, a re-imagining of Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho, is being developed with Universal Media Studios. As we all well know, a similarly-titled television endeavor called “Bates Motel,” starring Bud Cort, was tested in the ’80s and was ultimately nixed. And Gus Van Sant took liberty of remaking the original film back in ’98 leaving fans to assume the Bate lineage was effectively dead.
