The Weekend of Horrors Preview

Guests galore at Fangoria’s convention

Los Angeles’ horror social scene is getting fired up for Fangoria‘s Weekend of Horrors, a three-day blitz where genre industry vets pimp their wares and mix it up with their most devoted fans.

This summer, the place to be is Burbank, California where the WoH is set to explode next weekend (May 18 – 20) at the Burbank Airport Marriott Hotel (2500 Hollywood Way). Some are calling this the ideal warm-up for San Diego’s Comic-Con as the guest list has significantly grown over the last few months attracting horror hot-shots like Rob Zombie who will likely be accompanied by Sheri Moon Zombie, Scout Taylor-Compton and Danielle Harris to talk about his new Halloween film. Also on the roster: Neil Marshall (The Descent, Doomsday), Clive Barker (Midnight Meat Train), Henry Rollins and Joe Lynch (Wrong Turn 2), Thomas Jane and Frank Darabont (The Mist), Eli Roth, Bijou Phillips and Lauren German (Hostel: Part II), Adam Green (Hatchet, Spiral), Russell Mulcahy (Resident Evil: Extinction) and actor Michael Madsen.

And there’s a helluva lot more where that came from. The convention also promises a Resident Evil: Extinction costume and prop gallery, the Shock-n-Roll Spooktacular, a costume contest, a weekend-long film fest showing features and some choice indie shorts…in addition to the large dealers room.

The Marriott has undergone some changes since last year’s event, so those familiar with the locale may find some significant improvements. The usual watering holes are still there (you might spy a convention “guest” from time to time at the bar) and expect to pay for parking, although with patience you might find a spot on a neighboring street. Just pay attention to the street signs. It’d totally suck if you dropped a wad of dough on some rare region 2 DVD only to discover the Burbank P.D. ruined your day with a $60 parking ticket, wouldn’t it?

Like any con, you’ll be hoofing it around the dealers room so bring a bag because in addition to the loot you purchase there will likely be a swag table when you first enter the show room. The big Hollywood studios love to give away their promo freebies, so load up!

ShockTillYouDrop.com will be on the scene to bring you highlights throughout the weekend and look for this writer on stage as I moderate the Hatchet panel and the Shawnee Smith (the “Saw” series) Q & A. If you plan on attending, don’t be afraid to come over and say hi!
