The world cup may be over but the club football is just about to start again so i though we might do with a new soccer thread to discuss the transfers, teams, goals and events.
Being Australian the most football news I get is from the web and even that doesn't give all the information I need so I'm also hoping to use this forum to ask the questions that I can't find the answers to, example...
Can some one tell me what happened to David O'Leary? Sure Terry Venables is a super coach but why did Leeds get rid of the Irishman O'Leary?
Come on Bolton!!!

That was because Leeds needed about £15 million and he didn't want to sell Rio, they got rid of O' Leary and sold Rio for anout £30 million

Well, I'm glad that Manchester United have invested in a very talented defender after all they do need to sort out the defence, as for the price tag, well £30 million is a lot but Rio will have to prove himself worthy.
Not too long now until the new season kicks off, they are a few friendly tornaments to be played first. Man Utd are playing in the Amsterdam Tornament. Champions league qualifying for Man Utd, Newcastle and Celtic will be taken place soon.

That was just an excuse, O`leary had upset too many people at Leeds, and apparently (haven`t read it), he wrote a book that was effectively his death warrant.
Who cares anyways? Who are Leeds? And ManUre paid way too much for Ferdinand, yes he`s good, no doubt, but when all things in football are crashing down with regards to investment, 30 million is too much to pay.
It`s gonna be another good year for the Gunners, will be interesting to see Mr. Wengers new buys, especially how Gilberto fits in to the team. Is he a cover for Pires, Lundberg and Van Bronkhorst until they are fit from injury, or is he a replacement for when Viera leaves? Could be both I suppose.

I wonder what Blackburn will be like next season, they now have Yorke and Cole, both where at their peaks in the 1998 - 1999 season for Man Utd. Well, as long as Rio does his job right, that's all that matters. You would think that footballers and managers would resist doing any auto-biogs until they retire.

The rovers are going to be an improvment this year but honestly they'll be in the struggle to survive the drop at the end of the year along with West Brom, Birmingham, Southhampton, and, I have to say, my old boys at Bolton.
At the top of the table Arsenal or Liverpool are the sides to beat. And to be quite frank the Gunners should take the glory again if they can continue on with the way they played last season.

Bolton 1, Man United 0.
Just in case you missed it.
Bolton Wanderers 1, Manchester United Pig-dogs 0.
That make me a very happy chappie and despite the loss I also though we did very well at Liverpool.
Maybe the relegation battle isn’t going to be as tough as I thought. It’s not going to be easy but at least it’ll be better than I feared.

they didn`t just score the one they needed to take the new record, they put four away against Leeds. Now scored in 47 consecutive games in the Premier League!! Also set a new record for not losing in away matches.

It`s been on hold for 2 weeks for the "international break". Some pitiful results with England just scraping through the first game and managing to come back and draw with Macedonia, here`s looking to their qualification:clown:
Wales did very well with their win over Italy, making it 2 out of 2, and even Scotland managed 2 wins.
Still, Euro break is over, back to reality, the Premier League is back tomorrow, woohoo!!!!
Barring another embarrassing gaf for David Seaman, the Gooners should continue their smashing of Premier League records if they don`t lose to Everton.

I can hardly talk, Leeds are doing god awfull at the moment with El Tel at the helm, i'm hoping the win against West Ham put us back in the right direction.
Newcastle did very well to qualify for the second phase in the Champions League. Out of the British teams still in there I think Arsenal will go the furthest.

With beating Sunderland on saturday, Leeds now have the youngest goal scorer in Premiership history with Milner.

I support Leeds, but I still enjoy watching Arsenal just for Henry, is there nothing that man can't do.
(Good riddens to Bowyer and Dacort, who needs them anyway)
Um, you do. Dacourt was probably your best creative midfielder, and although Bowyer's a dick he'll be good one day, and he won't go back to Leeds. So you're stuck with... who do you have in central midfield? I am a Milner fan though, if only because one of my best mates is called James Milner - 2 years older, 2 times the talent - yeah right!
Henry does whoop ass, but for me I'd pay to watch Pires. He makes the league better with his presence, or did before his injury. If those two put it together right, it's pretty and unstoppable!
It's game day, so:
COME ON TORQUAY! You can do it!!!
And COME ON MAN UTD!!! Beat those Baggies! Sorry Daz Moore and Jase Roberts (ex Torquay).

Dacort was just a Dick Head with a big gob, Bowyer was good but he just kept standing on people's head (it was no good for morale)
Milner is a good prospect for the future, youngest scorer in premiership history can't be bad, but losing to Man City 2:1 is.
Losing to Man City is never good. How many more decent players are you going to offload? Fowler's out the door next.

Oh there's plenty more to go, with Terry as he is we could probably sell the whole team for about £2 million.
Nah, maybe a little more. He just chucks out the trouble makers for bargain basement prices.
I'm just watching the Birmingham-Arsenal game. Didn't see first half, heard some, Dugarry seems to have some quality to him, but if the Brum are gonna do anything against an Arsenal team as strong as this they need another 10 that good, and they just ain't. Stern John? Puh-lease.

I don't have sky so I can't watch thew game week in week out, I did get to see Southampton pummel Spurs 4:0 in the FA cup. Haven't Birmingham just bought Clemence from Spurs.
They appear to have signed many people, none of which look to be any good other than Dugarry, it's just rejects from other teams that seemed to have potential once, or players that didn't make it in the Premiership and were now at cash strapped Nationwide clubs, ie. Jamie Clapham. They'll be down with West Brom and the Hammers come the end of the season. Or maybe Bolton, we'll see.

Well Fowlers just about out the door as I speak for about £7 / £7.5 million, that's about the best 4 or 5 players Leeds had at the start of the season, he'll probably get rid of Kewell, Robinson, Woodgate and Smith all in one.
Are you suggesting Robinson, Woodgate and Smith are worth keeping?
And Robbie's staying, despite the papers already having him at Man *****ty. I hat to compliment Leeds, but he's wise to stay.

In my opinion Robinson should be the next England goalkeeper, Woodgate and Smith are prospects for Leeds providing their not beating people up.
My bad about Fowler, as I spoke he was leaving, he'd had his medical and passed, according to Ceefax he says he's got more to prove at Leeds.

I think Liverpool will have a good crack but my prediction is Liverpool 0 Man United 2.

Seeing as how they took West Ham apart Man Utd should be flying with confidence, and being on pretty good form and not being too bad off injury/squad wise, and Liverpool being generally pants this game should be interesting. When is it anyway?

Leeds are through to the last 8 with a 2:1 win over Palace, they were lucky as well as they had a goal disallowed when it shouldn't have been.

Palace where robbed that was definately a goal or a penalty, but sai la vie life goes on (Damn Leeds) Stoke played heroically against Chelsea considering they are doing so badly at the moment and 2-0 was about right on the day although I hoped Stoke would nick a goal!
I really hope Chelsea beat Arsenal, although the winner of that will probably win the cup. And Leeds get another easy tie that they'll struggle through.

I think Beckham's gonna walk out on Man U and come to Liverpool and revive our season so we win every game and storm to the to of the table to win the Premiership (He's got HIGH HOPES) Pants I just realised they've changed the transfer rules, BUGGER! my master plan has been foiled before it has even started!
JediPaul

I don't think that Beckham would go to Liverpool, if he was to leave the offers would be big deals coming his way and he would probably settle for going abroad, perhaps Real Madrid but I don't think that he'll leave at the end of the season.
Just watched the match, wasn't a great game and there wasn't the same fast tempo as other Manchester United Euro matches but the win was all that matters and Brown and Van the Man were on target to give Man Utd the 3 points.

Well, I just want Man Utd to do well in Euro out of the English teams because you guessed it: I'm a Manchester United fan.
It could have been a tense final few minutes but there consolation goal was lucky and perhaps took a slight deflection from Rio but I think Man U were comfortable throughout the game, there wasn't many shots on goal from both teams and Man U should have a penalty but Scholes did play advantage and I thought that he would have easily slotted the ball in after Van was felled. With 9 points Man U are in a good position, top of their table, they got to make sure they put more tempo and pace to the game next week.

Go Celtic! I so want them to tan the Pool, I will be watching that tie with much fascination.

United turned on the style against the Magpies. Who saw that one coming? And they didn't even need Beckham. They always seem to do better without him. Take note Fergie, Mr Solskjaer ain't bad either! I met Jonathan Greening last night!!!!
NOBODY has a clue who he is, I think I'm the only one!
Anyways he's a first team midfielder for Middlesborough and used to play for Man U also he is an England international and had a couple of caps! He was best man at this other footballer Richard Cresswels wedding at my hotel who has played for Leicsteser, Sheffield Wednesday and now he plays for Preston NE!!! :)
Jonathan Greening's quite good these days, he just never fit in at United. Deserving of his international call ups though I believe, a big part of Boro's rise.
I heard Man U were after Baraja, can't remember which other Brazilian they wanted. I think they can do without Beckham, there are several others who can score from free kicks, it's more the crossing they'd miss, which would be a big miss. And they wanna be asking plenty of money for him, in merchandise alone he's worth a tonne.
tedward
06-11-2003, 09:29 AM
I think Ronaldinio is the other Brazilian you are thinking of.
Man U have also been linked to Kewell, but hasnt everyone. I hope Kewell does leave, he needs to leave this year or next. On to bigger and better things, Viduka too for that matter.
Nah, I meant Ronaldinho as the first Brazilian, was talking about Baraja randomly, don't think he's Brazilian. Kewell could be a good aquisition, I never thought he was very good but he's impressed me at times this season, especially against Arsenal. I hope Ronaldinho isn't another Veron though - good player that just don't do nothing. And they need a proper partner for Ruud, dump Forlan!
Cisse (is that it?) on way to Liverpool - haha, another useless striker, I'd love it if they do get him, he so wouldn't be able to cut it in the Premiership.

Ha ha ha the second richest team in the world needs money.
AC Milan said that "none of their champions league champions deserve to be replaced". Whereas during Juve's dominance of the champions league they would replace heaps of players because "how do you motivate someone whos won the best club championship available?"
I think Beckham would be best at AC Milan, as the chimp said though he wont go to barca.

I doubt he'll be in the team all the time. I think he'll be less of a first choice than most people expect. I think United can do without him, especially if they sign a couple people. Kewell would be the best signing of the ones suggested, have him playing off Ruud and watch the goals fly in.

Who's gonna win it next season then?
I think it might be a United dominated year. They'll all be desperate to show there is life after Beckham, and if they bring the right guys in they'll be quality. Arsenal won't be the same without Seaman and some of the guys they're gonna have to offload. Kewell would be a good signing, but I don't think they'll win it. I reckon newcastle might finish second. Liverpool and Leeds'll finish higher this season, Southampton will continue to progress, Chelsea still won't work out they're quite good. Potentially the 3 that came up to go down. Although I think Boro might struggle for no apparant reason.
I await being completely wrong.

I heard Fergie originally planned to get rid of Giggs cos he had plans for playing 2 attackers off Ruud and he couldn't accomodate 2 wide men in this, but as he singled out Giggs for criticism Giggs responded well to it, played better and showed himself to be more versatile and able to play that role, while Beckham wouldn't be able to do this, and he wanted cash to bring in others so sacrificed him.
I don't think Man Utd will finish outside the top 2, I've a feeling this won't be a great season for the Gooners, but teams like Chelsea and Newcastle could do themselves proud. We shall see.

How will the British teams do in Europe since we are making predictions.

No idea because of all these changes.
Since Becks moved to Real Madrid, I think I have to cheer for Liverpool now. I like Owen, second after Becks.
United'll be the best of British in Europe as usual, Arsenal will crash out as usual. Someone might go on a decent run in the UEFA though. Maybe Newcastle or Chelsea when one of them gets knocked out of the Champions League. Celtic will do better than Rangers.

He was fit, they still dont know what was wrong with him. Its a shame to see him go.
Meanwhile some rusian billionaire has bought chelsea. Do you think they can buy success? They are reportedly after Nesta, Kewell, Kluivert and a host of other big names.

As a Chelsea fan I have to say I'm happy by the Russian take over. We look to be getting Duff and already have Johnson and Geremi. Even if our big spending doesn't the Russian Mafia muscle men will ensure we take home the trophy. :D

Yep, that is what I mean. Right now with Beckham in Spain, Arsenal is on the top form to be able to get that title, IMO.
