Warner Bros. Confirms Superman Reboot

Just a few days after this article was posted, Warner Bros. Pictures Group President Jeff Robinov has told The Wall Street Journal that the studio is going to be reintroducing Superman. We assume this will be similar to how Louis Leterrier's The Incredible Hulk was a reboot of Ang Lee's Hulk. Here is what the article says:

Warner Bros. also put on hold plans for another movie starring multiple superheroes -- known as "Batman vs. Superman" -- after the $215 million "Superman Returns," which had disappointing box-office returns, didn't please executives. "'Superman' didn't quite work as a film in the way that we wanted it to," says Mr. Robinov. "It didn't position the character the way he needed to be positioned." "Had 'Superman' worked in 2006, we would have had a movie for Christmas of this year or 2009," he adds. "But now the plan is just to reintroduce Superman without regard to a Batman and Superman movie at all."

The article also talks about Warner Bros. adapting other DC properties over the new few years. "By 2011, Mr. Robinov plans for DC Comics to supply the material for up to two of the six to eight tent-pole films he hopes Warner Bros. will have in the pipeline by then," it says. Those projects will likely be about single characters at first, and will be darker much like The Dark Knight:

With "Batman vs. Superman" and "Justice League" stalled, Warner Bros. has quietly adopted Marvel's model of releasing a single film for each character, and then using those movies and their sequels to build up to a multicharacter film. "Along those lines, we have been developing every DC character that we own," Mr. Robinov says.

Like the recent Batman sequel -- which has become the highest-grossing film of the year thus far -- Mr. Robinov wants his next pack of superhero movies to be bathed in the same brooding tone as "The Dark Knight." Creatively, he sees exploring the evil side to characters as the key to unlocking some of Warner Bros.' DC properties. "We're going to try to go dark to the extent that the characters allow it," he says. That goes for the company's Superman franchise as well.

The studio is set to announce its plans for future DC movies in the next month. For now, though, it is focused on releasing four comic-book films in the next three years, including a third Batman film, a new film reintroducing Superman, and two movies focusing on other DC Comics characters. Movies featuring Green Lantern, Flash, Green Arrow, and Wonder Woman are all in active development.

We'll let you know as soon as the studio has announced its plans for future DC movies.

This is why DC will never beat out Marvel.....

WB still has control over characters they know nothing about. Now they want all the movies to be dark and brooding???? Is that that why they think Batman did so well?????????????? IDIOTS!!!

The strength is in the differences!! Flash is not dark!! He comes out in the day time! He's happy!

Wonder Woman and superman are optimists!!! They are trying to make all of these caheracters into carbon copies of Batman!

This is gonna blow......

Props to Marvel for owning their characters!!!

Yep, that's pretty darn stupid. Just about every "World's Finest" or other Batman / Supes comic cover illustrates why they work so well together. Nearly all of them are something like Batman brooding in the shadow of something, crouched down on top of a tall-ass building and scowling at the city below him while nearby, Superman stands tall with the sun on his face, looking up to the sky with his chest puffed out heroically. They have almost nothing in common other than their desire to help people and kick ass. Trying to make a Superman movie similar in tone to Batman is almost as stupid as oh, say, making Superman a dad or something.

Exactly!! Why not look at the diferences and make them mesh?? Warner Bros. do not respect the product. These legendary characters mean nothing to them. This is just stinks.....

As long as they remove the over the top religious tone of Superman, I'll be happy. Another thing that needs to be done is the whole stupid Superman can't control his strength.

Yeah, because Electra, Fantastic four, Hulk, Xmen 3, the punisher (all), Blade Trinity, Ghost Rider etc are bloody classics!

Marvel spits out movies. Some end up good, most dont. While you seem to think Warner is some kind of enemy, Batman Begins and the Dark knight are ages ahead of anything from Marvel. The Watchmen looks to follow the same pattern.

I notice you left out The Spiderman Movies and the Xmen that did quite well. and for all their weakness FF raked in the cash.....

Ironman and the Hulk are the beginnings of what their ownership is gonna do.

I left out spiderman because i think they are all horrible movies and I dont feel like going into yet another discussion why they are. Then I left out xmen because they are good. If the obvious irony went straight past you then...well....I dont know what to say. By classics i ment FUBAR.

And all you do is talk about cash. I dont care.

and Hulk didn't even make as much as the first. and TDK pretty much outdid IM.
and the spiderman movies are pretty crappy. the only good one was 2. the rest are mediocre.

Hate to say it but everyone prefers darkness and violence over stuff that is for everyone. Look at SW fans and Spiderman fans, they hate light stuff. They want the franchises to become insanely dark and violent. DC might be on to something. Perhaps Hollywood should, you know...purge PG and G films and content that is lighthearted.
