Interesting thread, though you should maybe tell us why you don't like those movies because I really can't see where anyone wouldn't like Back to the Future. And my advice to you for Kane is simply to watch it again and perhaps you will appreciate it more.

As for me, I don't like the Sound of Music, mostly because I find the songs very irritating.

Shakespeare In Love

Why Braveheart?

Doomsday
08-19-2008, 02:41 PM
Two movies I never got the hate for were Braveheart and Dances With Wolves. I usually hear "historically inaccurate," but only the history channel concerns itself with accuracy, seldom do films. Not saying this is the case with elephant, but lots of times film nuts don't like a BP winner just to go against the grain and sound sophisticated.

Shakespeare in Love sucked hard though.

Citizen Kane is hardly overrated, but I can't stand most of these ridiculous old war movies with John Wayne. Many of the old westerns were entirely overrated (but John Ford made some incredible films, like The Searchers).

And I don't enjoy Citizen Kane or almost any western.

i think citizen kane is really overrated, so is back to the future.

Why don't you like Citizen Kane? What exactly is your reason? And if you hate BTTF there's something wrong with you.

Not a fan of The Shining, West Side Story, and I think Raging Bull is good, but not nearly on the level of being #4 on AFI's list. When he's boxing it's excellent, when he's not it's just not that interesting.

I loved Singin' in the Rain. In fact, I was SHOCKED at how much I loved it.

I think also sometimes some movies need to be watched twice. For example, the first time I saw A Clockwork Orange I didn't like it. I watched it again and realized how amazing the themes Kubrick represents are. So I tell a lot of people who didn't like Citizen Kane to read about it after they watch it (Roger Ebert gives great in-depth stuff on it) and watch it again with those things in mind to truly appreciate it.

Blade Runner is one movie I never understood the hoopla for. Saw it for the first time several months ago and got bored by it.

Another one that almost had the same effect is Alien. Good movie, don't ge me wrong, but I sometimes hear people say its better than Aliens(which I loved) and scarier. The chestburster scene was voted among the scariest of all time and it was gruesome, yet I thought the chestburster scene in Aliens(before the marine ambush) was scarier and more gruesome.

Tornado
08-19-2008, 07:43 PM
Blade Runner and Alien are two of my all-time favorite films, with the former placing somewhere in my top 10.

Also, I think A Clockwork Orange is a tad overrated. I definitely enjoyed it (mostly for the brilliant cinematography), but I couldn't empathize/sympathize at all with Alex. I saw that as a big flaw, as I can identify to some extent with most characters of his nature. Hell, even the Joker in The Dark Knight was easier for me to identify with.

iv3rdawG
08-19-2008, 07:46 PM
In Alien you didn't even know what a chestburster was.. that's what made it so scary. Wherein Aliens we knew what would happen already. I re-watched both a couple weeks ago and Alien is still my favorite of the two but Aliens is a lot more fun to watch.

JustinW
08-19-2008, 07:48 PM
I enjoyed Alien a lot more. Alien is more intense and much more frightening than Aliens.

But both are good in their own respect. And I definitely agree that Blade Runner is a masterpiece.

The thing about Tootsie is, comedies are always going to seem a little... lightwheight, when it's put on a list like that. But really it sets out to do everything it's intended to do. I have the same situation whenever a Juno or Little Miss Sunshine gets an Oscar nomination over a serious also-ran. Maybe it is a little crazy to nominate Juno instead of say, The Wind that Shakes the Barley, but not every great movie has to be a serious meditation on a social issue, and/or a visual splendor to be great.

Well that's the imagery it's going for. It wouldn't be nearly as effective if its vision of the future was happy and optimistic, especially when filmmakers could use visions of the outcome of the Cold War as a backdrop. I think also it depends which version of Blade Runner you watch. I'd say always watch the theatrical version first and then branch off so you get the gist of the story and then compare cuts later. But I agree on The Shining all the way.

Oh I do get the imagery they were striving for and it seemed to work for most folks. My opinion though is mostly based on emotion which all that damp dreariness gave me. I'm not downing the director's choice at all.

I'm not certain which cut it was though. I don't have one to compare the other with. It was older so I'm assuming it was the theatrical version. The Director's cut came out not too long ago I'm believe.

But that movie has got to be, like, 10 years old!

what exactly is the "classic" age anyway?

There's a bunch of movies in this thread that I don't call classics either - and it doesn't have that much to do with their age.

A classic is a movie that everyone holds in high esteem - something that holds up viewing after viewing. Yes, it has to stand the test of time, but it has to have a special quality first.

Young Einstein is 20 years old but I'd never call it a classic just because of that - does anyone even remember Yahoo Serious? :meanie:
I mean REALLY remember him?

I agree, the age of the movie is only part of the formula. I think there are some movies that become instant classics and haven't been around long.

Signs is probably not classic material. Actually one of my favorite movies, though. I didn't find it boring at all, but this does seem to be a movie that people either really love or really hate.

Signs has enjoyable moments, but the end is just....yuck. It kills it.

Is there a Reason u dont like these movies?

Vertigo is Great Hitchcock movie

Jimmy Stewart is unconvincing, the plotting is slow, the ending is awful, and the famous technical aspects (the dream sequence and the camera zoom/pan) don't hold up over time at all.

Aliens is an overblown 80s action movie. The set design, the direction, the writing, and the entire concept is such a blunt and obtuse response to the sheer elegance and precision that is Alien.

The Shawshank Redemption : Men :: The Notebook : Women

Duck Soup is strange because given my tastes for smartass humor and overblown satire, you'd think I'd dig it. I really, really did not.

Goodfellas is obnoxious and cynical with no emotional weight. Some scenes with Pesci are admittedly well-done, but otherwise I found the whole movie to be pretty grating.

I'm also not the biggest Goodfellas fan. I didn't really feel drawn to any of the characters and didn't find myself caring for any of them. Then again, I also understand that it's also the point of the movie.

Duck Soup though, what's there not to like?

A movie that I dislike heavily would have to be Titanic. The title of the movie says Titanic but it was actually a romance story. I know they couldn't just have the ship sinking and everything but the way they decided to go about the storyline bugged me. Maybe I just dislike the Celine Dion music.
