View Full Version : Is it time for studios to re-release movies?

With the exception of May, summer 2009 sucks for the most part. That's why WB moved Harry Potter to July. It's extra cash from lack of strong competition.

But, anyway...

Seeing as the summer is weak, do you think studios should go back to re-releasing movies? There's people here old enough to remember a time when studios re-released movies all the time. The last time that we had major re-releases was with the original Star Wars trilogy in 1997. That was 11 years ago.

So what do you think? And what movies should be re-released?

Home video kind of killed the theatrical re-release, not many people are going to pay theater prices to see somthing that's readily availible on DVD for a $2 rental.

True, but I guess hardcore fans would love to see their favorite movies on the big screen. It's a gamble that could see some profit. Obviously they can't re-release a movie to 3,000 theaters but atleast 700 would be fine for an experiment.

There are a few theaters in LA that play older and classic films, and the ones I go to are usually pretty packed. I wouldn't mind a few more being made to show some like Raiders of the Lost Ark or Lawrence of Arabia.

The theater in my ciy that showed the first 3 Bond movies are showing more classics for a while. Interesting ones include The Great Escape, Alien, Ghostbusters and Psycho.

I would love to see Lawrence of Arabia on the big screen. I was very excited to see Apoc Now re-released back in 2000/2001. Big epics like that would be awesome to see on the big screen; Ben Hur, Bridge on the River Kwai, or even more recent epics like Braveheart and Dances with Wolves. I would love to see that buffalo hunt on the big screen.

I've said in a few threads that Lawrence of Arabia was the best cinematic experience I've been to (I saw it in an old theater, I'm not 50 or anything).

The theatre closest to me has this thing every Monday, called something like The Golden Age, when they show a movie from way back when they first started becoming huge. Black and white classics and stuff like that, I thought that was pretty cool.

I would love to have that here. I guess that's what you sacrifice when you live in a smaller city in the middle of vast prairies.

Man, some of you guys are lucky. I wish there was a theater in my city that screened old movies.

and every last thursday of the month, they show the Rocky Horror Picture Show.

I saw it in an old theater as well, Omar and O'Toole were there as well as a bunch of other people. I'm lucky enough to be in a area that has an AFI so we get old movies on the big screen all the time. They're wrapping up an 80's theme. I missed E.T. and they were playing Lawrence of Arabia as part of something else. It'll be hard to move away from such luxury.

There are a few bars that show old films and there's a Cinema Drafthouse.

Yeah, I want to see 2001 in theaters. Some day...

Lucky for me, seeing JP in the theaters is still fresh in my head after 15 years.

I got to see ET when it did its 20th anniversary re-release. Also Apoc Now when its redux came out, which was awesome to see.
