View Full Version : Here's a thought for Summer 2009: How About Some Space?!

The writer's strike did affect summer 2009. It looks very lacking. However, this could be very easily fixed. How about some space? Now, I know what you're thinking. This is eliminating competition. True, but studios put so much effort on May (which looks good BTW) that June, July, and August look pretty depressing. So, how about moving some of those May releases to one of the three remaining months and as result picking up the slack.
Let's look at the May schedule first.
May 1
- Hannah Montana: The Movie
- X-Men Origins: Wolverine
May 8
- Star Trek
May 15
- Angels & Demons
- Bruno
May 22
- Night at the Museum: Battle of the Smithsonian (conventional theaters and IMAX)
- Terminator Salvation
May 29
- Drag Me to Hell
- The Lonely Maiden (limited)
- Up (Disney Digital 3-D)
Now, let's break it down:
May 1st. Do you really need Wolverine and Hannah Montana? How about Disney moves Miss Montana to June?
May 8th is fine.
May 15th. Think Bruno (Sacha Baron Cohen's follow-up to Borat) has a chance against Angels & Demons? Or vice versa? How about Universal moving Bruno to August?
May 22nd. Terminator doesn't need to be released in a busy month like May. It already has to compete with a couple of big franchises. I think a move to July could work.
May 29th. Does Universal really want to release Drag Me to Hell, Sam Raimi's return to the horror genre as a director, in a busy May?! How about June or August?
Just a thought, guys.
Or, if you want to get more extreme, how about moving Watchmen and Monsters vs. Aliens (both March releases) as well as The Wolfman (opening in April) on June, July, or August?
Again, just a thought.

May looks really busy. I don't know how big Star Trek is going to be but it sucks that Angels and Demons (Da Vinci Code was mediocre to me but it made big money) and Bruno is coming out so its second week might not be as good. Then next week is Terminator and Night at the Museum sequel which both are gonna make big money. Then next week is Up, Pixar's new movie. The next 3 months don't look very busy. I think this year's summer was more busy.

oh...
well the reason I said August looks horrible is because the only thing that looks to be a little bit worth taking your to see is G.I. Joe. But... from everything I've read that seen of that film. It's going to be a bad film.

May is a little too busy. Which is common these days, of course. However, since the rest of the summer sucks it is a good idea to spread those May releases throughout the summer.

lol. Yea. It's Sasha Baron Coen's follow-up to Borat.

This is exactly the reason why the new Harry Potter movie is being pushed back (which is a choice I still very much disagree with)

When does Watchmen come out?

Watchmen comes out March I believe. G.I. Joe and Star Trek are going to be the biggest movies for me next year. Easily, G.I. Joe looks like a semi-good movie from screenshots and well the writing looks pretty good from what I've read. Star Trek looks really good as well, hopefully more comes out on the visual front.

What is the argument against Hannah Montana and Wolverine being on the same weekend? You really think their fanbases will intertwine?

If Disney were smart they'd move the release date. Why compete againist Wolverine when you have the rest of the lacking summer to take advantage of.

in response to road warrior's first comments:
i think all the releases are fine where they are... well... most of them.
like in 2003, lizzie mcguire held it's own against x-men 2... so Disney will do the same with it's new lizzie mcguire, Hannah Montana. they will keep it in that spot because it's very safe for them. since when do tweener girls like Wolverine?
i think Star Trek is taking a HUGE risk opening on May 8th... the second weekend in May is never usually good for any movie (see "Speed Racer", "Poseidon"), especially for a franchise that mainstream audiences have never really given a crap for. they need a TON of convincing to go see that one. i say Star Trek moves to... well i don't know where it should move to. it should've stayed in December, i believe. i'll get back to it in a little while.
Angels and Demons will probably bomb (am i going out on a limb on that one? everybody hated the first one... why in the world would they do a second?) Bruno won't bomb. it'll do very well.
i say Night at Museum and Terminator Salvation are just fine in that spot. wise choices from the respective studios. night is for the kids, while the teens and/or parents check out the terminator.
the reason why Universal is releasing DRAG ME TO HELL on may 29th is because it's last horror movie, STRANGERS, was released may 30th of this year and did very, very nicely and looked somewhat unique yet simple. so does drag me to hell. so like Disney, they will stay safe and use the same date as their Strangers. UP is using the same date as Finding Nemo too.
although if Universal was really like that (seeing what movies did well on certain dates and releasing a movie of the same genre on the exact same weekend the next year), then they would move the big-budget old-time era WOLFMAN the hell away from April 3rd (which is the same weekend their big-budget old-time-era LEATHERHEADS bombed the previous year) and move it to... i dunno... july 24th, or july 31st.
back to Star Trek... they really should have kept it in December. may 8th is dangerous territory. here's a suggestion... angels and demons could move to may 8th and then star trek moves along over to may 15th. sounds smart enough. give wolverine two weeks and then steamroll it.
i think every other movie is fine for now... one thing though: that was really mean of warner bros. to come and take land of the lost's spot. so, so cruel. i'm gonna go see land of the lost over HP anyway but that was so mean. now watch Universal do something stupid and move Land of the Lost into the last weekend of September where it will bomb and die.
that's all for now.
so far next summer, i will be seeing WOLVERINE, STAR TREK, perhaps BRUNO, TERMINATOR: SALVATION, NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM 2 (come onnn...the first one was fun), UP, possibly DRAG ME TO HELL, TRANSFORMERS 2, PUBLIC ENEMIES, maybe ICE AGE 3 (2 sucked, and 1 gets bland over time) LAND OF THE LOST, and G.I. JOE if it looks cool.
that's about all i think...
