I just saw an advanced screening of American Teen, a doc about midwestern kids, and it freakin rocked. I'm a sucker for high school stories--Freaks & Geeks, the early years of Buffy, Friday Night Lights (book, movie AND show), and this was right up there--but it really made me think, why am I so drawn to them?
And I think it's cuz I was unpopular in high school (I mean, even moreso than now :)) that these stories still resonate with me--part of me wants to relive it, to be someone else vicariously, and part of me has to watch like when you stare at a glass falling and shattering instead of doing something about it...and part of me just wants to see the nerd win. I remember the South Park guy in Bowling for Columbine saying you always say you always see yourself as who you were in high school, no matter how old you are--anybody find that to be true?
Hell, while I'm at it, what are some awesome high school TV/Movies I might have missed?

Well almost all of the John Hughes movies are the best, and John Cusack is in some nice ones as well (I'm going off the golden years for the genre which is the '80s). The Breakfast Club is fantastic, and there's also Sixteen Candles, Better Off Dead, Say Anything, Weird Science, Ferris Bueller's Day Off, Dazed and Confused, Clueless, Mean Girls, Juno, and Pretty in Pink are some of my favs.

once i graduated high school... i didn't give a **** about the high school setting. avoid tv shows in particular.
but i do enjoy dazed every once in a while, and superbad is obviously pretty solid.

Dazed and Confused is one of my top 10 favorites. I love that the cool kids are actually the main characters. Alway focusing on the losers or nerds gets really old. I don't want to see a movie about the kids I picked on in high school.

My So Called Life only lasted one season, but it was good. At least, i remember it being good. I haven't actually seen it since it was on.

Yeah shame it did not continue. Little know fact: Mirko's brother in law was an extra in most of the MSCL episodes. He was set to become a regular in season but the series got cancled.

You took the movies right out of my mouth. I was going to name all of those. Out of the ones you listed my favs are 16 Candles, Say Anything, Mean Girls and Juno.
Don't get me wrong the others are fantastic! Dazed is great but those are the ones I love the most. High school movies have a great appeal bc that is a point in your life where you feel like you are grown up yet you still have your entire life ahead of you. Like a clean slate you still have time to add to it and you are not judged at this point in your life by a job, wealth or your house but more by what you do, who you hang with and your personality. I am rambling but the feeling I always get from watching a movie that takes place in this time of your maturation is the feeling of hope. The hope and possibilities are still endless.
